This is such playing as, really, others only hint at. Imagine, Horowitz trying to do with the A minor Etude what Richter does here. You see, Horowitz was a coloristic genius and had that little twitch that you need to make things interesting. But Richter, well, Richter has his share of the neurosis required, also, but there is a sense of stiller waters, running deeper. The A minor one is the most difficult, and many pianists founder here. Not this man. He thinks, as is said below, like the composer, and is not afraid to go where that may lead. Possibly the greatest all round pianist of the twentieth century. You could make that argument. But let's not bother. Thank God these recordings exist. Recently, I've been enjoying Nicholas Angelich's offering of all of the ETs of Rachmaninoff, but would dearly love to have a Richter recording of all of them.

"I am starting to realize that I have not understood Bach at all, earlier. Not to exaggerate, I have understood a part, but not what I hear now for the first time. The music of the Heavenly Spheres. It is completely beyond words, in the fourth or fifth dimension.?"

"This is sublime. The pianissimo pentatonics in the right hand sound like rippling water, the clusters in the left hand resemble cymbals or struck percussion. The level of detail and the ease with which it all flows is breathtaking. Richter was a genius.?"

"No one had a repertoire like Richter, no one! He played Britten, Clementi, Bach, Mozart, Schumann, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Bartok, Szymanowski, Scarlatti, Mussorgsky, Scriabin, and the worst you could say about him is that he occasionally overpedaled or smudged notes. But Richter had such conviction, such humility, such energy and honesty at the keyboard. And he did it all over the globe and performed whatever the conditions. I can't say enough good things about him.?"

"When Richter came to the United States for the first time (had sailed on the Queen Mary), I heard him play one Rachmaninoff Prelude after another for encores. Very impressive! There was a 'stampede' of enthusiasts rushing down the aisles to front of stage. On the program, think I liked best his Scriabin 5th Sonata. A whirlwind. For effect he began that work even before sitting down (after intermission) - his fingers rumbling the cosmic streak while standing! Other than extreme, total commitment, I found it difficult to recognize a unique personality. I was a young student and since my teacher had known (well) his teacher, Neuhaus, we were the first of a long line asked to come forward and meet him, with discussion behind closed doors. Only a Soviet henchman present, silently meandering in the background.?"
